Once a sentinel protecting and guiding ships around and to one of the outermost of the Florida Keys, today the Key West Lighthouse stands mostly as a beacon of tourism. By climbing the lighthouse's 88 stair steps, a visitor can glean a view of the Gulf of Mexico and most of Key West. The surrounding trees began to block the light in the late 19th century, prompting the government to raise the structure 20 feet.
