Point Sur Lighthouse is in a beautiful location, sitting atop a volcanic rock that juts into the Pacific Ocean via a land spit about a quarter mile long. The lighthouse lies in the area of Big Sur, California, which has seen its share of shipwrecks — including the crash of the airship USS Macon in 1935, which plunged into the waters in view of the lighthouse and sank to a depth of over 1,400 feet.
