As glorious as they are, the deep reds of a desert sunset are not a mystery. Because of the low angle, the rays of the sun must pass through a lot more atmosphere before they reach our eyes. The vapor in the air soaks up a lot of the light from the cooler end of the spectrum, leaving us with the warm tones we see in sunset skies. So, no mystery; but still exquisite.
