The first people to farm the fields of the Great Smoky Mountains were the Cherokees, about a millennium ago. They did so alone for about 500 years, before European explorers wandered through, setting the settling in motion. Today the land is still rich in farms, mostly on valley floors surrounded by beautiful blue mountains.
