A butte, such as this one near Big Bend National Park in the south of Texas, is formed when erosion wears away soft rock around hard rock, the latter of which is left behind as sort of an altitude island in the landscape. Native Americans sometimes considered buttes to be sacred ground, sites for rituals and worship.
