Northern Elephant Seals bark for different reasons, depending on age and gender. Males bark to sort out who the most dominant are, and therefore who can expect to be courting the women this breeding season. The women and youngsters bark in order to stay in touch in the largest mainland colonies, so that Mom can protect her young from predators and territorial misunderstandings with other seals.
