St. Augustine Light Anastasia Island Yes Yes
St. Johns River (Mayport) Light Mayport No Yes Grounds open on weekends.
St. Johns Light Mayport No No Can be seen from nearby Navy base. Call the base for permission to visit.

Georgia Lighthouses

Lighthouse Location Operational? Public Access to Grounds? Photography Notes
Cockspur Island Light Tybee Island No Yes You need a boat to get there; part of Fort Pulaski National Monument.
Little Cumberland Island Light Little Cumberland Island No No Only the top can be seen from a boat; the only way for most people to photograph it is from the air, as the island is well-protected private property.
Sapelo Island Light Sapelo Island Yes Yes
St. Simons Island Light Brunswick Yes Yes
Tybee Island Light Tybee Island Yes Yes

North Carolina Lighthouses

Lighthouse Location Operational? Public Access to Grounds? Photography Notes
Bald Head "Old Baldy" Light Bald Head Island No Yes
Bodie Island Light Outer Banks Yes Yes Lots of room to work. Nice grove of trees on one side. Best light is at either magic hour — beginning of day, lighthouse will be backlit, end of day frontlit. However, trees will block the sunlight before the sun sets.
Cape Hatteras Light Outer Banks Yes Yes Light hits it all day. Be warned, though: the lighthouse was moved a few years ago and no longer sits next to water. It's in a field surrounded by brush and trees; not very aesthetic surroundings anymore.
Cape Lookout Light Beaufort Yes Yes
Currituck Beach Light Outer Banks Yes Yes
Diamond Shoal Light Outer Banks Yes No Offshore. May be photographed by boat.
Oak Island Light Oak Island Yes Yes You can photograph anytime, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. To 2 p.m. You can get into the Coast Guard station on a tour. 910-278-1133. According to Sandra Shanklin, you can drive to the lighthouse.
Ocracoke Island Light Outer Banks Yes Yes
Roanoke River Light Edenton No No

South Carolina Lighthouses

Lighthouse Location Operational? Public Access to Grounds? Photography Notes
Bloody Point Bar Range Lights Daufaskie Island No No
Cape Romain Light Lighthouse Island, Mclellanville No No
Charleston Light Sullivans Island Yes Yes Not particularly attractive. Its high height makes it difficult to shoot from an angle other than up. Not much around it to use in the foreground, but you might find something along the beach.
Georgetown Light Georgetown Yes No
Haig Point (Range Rear) Light Daufuskie Island, Hilton Head Yes Yes
Harbour Town Lighthouse Hilton Head Island No Yes Facsimile lighthouse. But it looks nice. Plenty of room to work in, either from the neighboring shore or harbor.
Hilton Head Range Rear (Leamington) Light Hilton Head Island No Yes, by appointment Skeletal frame. Call 803-785-1106.
Hunting Island Light Hunting Island State Park, St. Helena No Yes Grounds open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Morris Island Light Morris Island, Folly Beach No No Slightly challenging to shoot well. It's in the middle of the water about a couple hundred yards off shore. Park at the far northeast end of Folley Beach and make the quarter-mile walk to the beach at the tip of the island. Lighthouse is front-lit at mid-day, side-lit at sunrise and sunset. Shooting at low tide will get you closer to the lighthouse and can give you tide pools to use as foreground elements.
